겉으로 봤을 때는 모른다.
나무는 각기 다른 두께, 다른 삶, 다른 공기 속에 자신의 삶을 온전히 맡긴다.
그 자신을 잘라 내기 전까진 자신 안에 얼마나 차 있을지 모르는 것이다.
한 인간으로서의 인생을 잘라 지켜볼 수 있는 것은 무엇을 의미하는 것일까?
아직 까지 모든 인간은, 자신의 나이테의 중간을 간접적으로 비유하며 저마다 다른 가치관에 투영시킨다.
인간도 저마다 각각 인생의 레이어가 있다.
그것은 동일한 생명체가 없듯 수만 가지의 독립된 레이어들이 존재한다.
자신의 이력서 한 장안에 정리되었을 한 줄 한 줄이, 그 줄의 쌓임을 중요하게 생각했을 삶도 있을 것이고,
자신이 읽은 책이 쌓이고 쌓여 책장의 알록달록함과 달랐던 책의 높낮이의 흐름에 만족하는 이도 있을 것이고,
한 건축가에겐 자신의 가치관이 담긴 건물이 본인의 나이테이다.
예술가들에겐 그간에 쌓였을 작업물의 무게 또한 그의 인생에 진한 레이어 자국들인 것이다.
수많은 레이어는 기억의 창고이자 경험의 결과이다.
일련이 경험이 모여 두껍거나 얇은, 부서지기 쉽거나 정말 단단한, 그때 당시의 다양한 선율을 반영하고 만들어낸다.
그것은 반복되어 보이기도 하고, 겹쳐 보이기도 하는 그야말로 인고의 세월인 것이다.
또한 독립된 개인들이 어떤 것을 위해 수도 없이 시도했을 자아의 신화이자 통과의례다.
모든 유기체들은 필연적으로 삶에 흔적을 남긴다.
한번의 도전, 알 수 없는 시작과 끝, 언제인가 모를 텅 빔, 깨달음, 환경의 변화들, 그리고 흐름.
