Rusted Bones On An Orange Shore

During my first year of my Art A Level, I produced a series of relief sculptures for my coursework. They are made up of rusted pieces found along the dirt paths in Doha as well as the Industrial Area. The objects were then washed and glued onto MDF boards, where they had images of rusted metal in the bottom left corner, the rest of it panted with watered down orange ink and the rusted areas were highlighted with salt.

They represent three different ideas:

The Ribcage (two turquoise rake heads) represents the heart of Qatar, formerly a haven for pearl divers, now the wealth comes from the oil industry. The bones of the ribcage are the pearl industry, now hollow and empty, whilst the ink is the oil, slicked along the board.

The Spine (twisted rusted rake head) is the backbone of Qatar, the long lines of the people who fuel the city and keep it alive, and whilst this is true in most cities, some cityscapes/landscapes need to be devoid of people to be truly beautiful.

The Mind (battered bowl with odds & ends) represents the shiny surfaces of Qatar, built upon rusted structures that quickly decay. The rust is the beauty, lost in vivid decay, aged into maturity and the shine is just an aesthetic (lost character).

(2012 entry - In my private opinion, acting as a contradiction to the above prose, I just chose the pieces of rusted metal because they were interesting; take the bowl for example. I would throw the bowl on its own side just to get it to spin. The rake heads were just brilliant to play with. All in all though, there was no higher meaning, just a nice image, or set of rules. Maybe once in my life I actually believed the above, or that was the actual reason [hence why I kept it up] but otherwise I think you lot should just enjoy it.

PS. I got rid of the caps lock. Once it looked nice to have caps locked letters for the entire description, but after a while, it began to just give me a headache.)
Close up shots of the Ribcage,
evidencing the salty highlights and the inkscape,
along with further texturing
- "lovely poetic stanza notification"
I managed to frame the images,
which gets rid of the beige concrete at the top of the Ribcage,
however because it has a beige/orange strip of paper instead,
I wouldn't really bother
- "think I'll start to make all my notifications like this"
