PAINTING WITH RUST
Scope of work : Garment construction, Surface exploration
NID Ahmedabad, 2018
Guide : Sonal Chauhan, Nasir Hussain Bhai

Introduction to Apparel was a 3 week course project in which we learnt the basics of pattern making and draping. Following this, I worked on a garment inspired from a photograph
The photograph was taken at Tantipara Masjid, West Bengal. Built in the 1400s by the then Sultan of Bengal, the mosque was a brilliant standing structure held together by 10 domes, but all that remains now are the stone pillars and a few walls with intricate terracotta embossed tiles.
The major keywords pertaining to the garment were noted. The visual cues for the garment came from the details of the monument along with the feelings it evoked in me. The colour palette for the garment was directly picked from brick red shades of the monument.

The final keywords picked for the moodboard :
WEATHERED   |    DISTORTED    |    HEAVY    |     RELIEF WORK    |    TEXTURED

I chose to work on the textured visuals of the garment before the silhouette. While focusing on this, I realised my inspiration's similarity with rust. This led me to explore the surface designs possible with the medium.
Visual textures explored using rust dyeing.
Surface textures explored through fabric manipulation.
Garment sketches according to the visual textures explored.

Other than the surface design, the silhouette and fabric of the garment was also inspired from the form of the monument. A high density cotton fabric was chosen for the main base so that a straight fall could be observed in the garment.

Rust dyeing is done in patches resembling the brick wall look and the a few edges are raw finished for a broken down feel.
