The famous French lingerie brand – Aubade, after its collaborations with Christian Lacroix and Karl Lagerfeld in 2019 and 2021, announced its creative collaboration with an Artist (non designer) HONG Wai, for its autumn/ winter 2020 collection. Aubade interprets HONG Wai’s drawing to Swiss embroidery and French lace, to create a collection entitled Encre de Chine. After this successful event, Aubade reedits the collaboration HONG Wai X Aubade for the 2022 spring / summer season.

For Autumn/ Winter 2020, it’s time to head East. After Christian Lacroix and Viktor & Rolf, Aubade has invited Hong Wai to interpret her own vision of timeless lingerie. For her capsule collection with Aubade, the Chinese artist created a special edition line featuring custom lace and embroideries specially developed to represent the meeting of these two worlds.

Best known for bringing back the ancient Chinese tradition ink painting and calligraphy into the contemporary realm, Hong Wai brings the lingerie design in the world of Contemporary Ink Art, poetically waxing on the woman as her canvas. Related to the philosophy of traditional Chinese ink painting, the voluptuous female body in Wai’s work is like a cosmic body, where brush lines creat the movement and force which restoring the vitality, “vite et plein”, the emptiness and fullness, real and the imagined, in all its sensuality.

Titled Encre de Chine, the fashion sketches transform into a 7-piece collection of lace garments creating the sole vision reflecting the process in Wai’s own work – from the sketch of a pattern and into the final object. The first step in development was the newly developed ombré lace, richly building the antique floral embroidery in black with gold accents, atop a nude base. A game of transparency adds another layer that Hong Wai’s work is so recognisable for.
Launching in June 2020, the capsule keeps in with Aubade’s mantra for the AW20 collections – theatricality.

Aubade Taps Chinese Artist Hong Wai for Capsule Collection

For Autumn/ Winter 2020, it’s time to head East. After Viktor & Rolf and Christian Lacroix, Aubade has invited Paris based Chinese artist Hong Wai to create a capsule collection with Aubade, representing the meeting of Art and Mode.

"After Viktor & Rolf and Christian Lacroix, we wanted to offer an even more original collaboration, with a young Chinese artist who lives in Paris and who makes paintings by reinterpreting traditional Chinese painting," says Martina Brown, the deputy director general of Aubade Paris, in an interview with FashionUnited. “We were very touched by her visuals so we asked her to do a floral design for our collection. Known for her Chinese ink paintings and calligraphy in ancient Chinese tradition, Hong Wai was given free rein to create this floral motif found throughout the line titled "Chinese Ink".
