austerity machines

This was a weird one for me. Viewpoint Magazine (UK) asked me to do 'something I have never done before', which turned out to be the trickiest commission ever: Whatever idea pops up is not to be trusted since it is yours and could be what you would have always done...so I worked with Ash Gibson, a graphic artist I have done  a lot of magazine work with, and we decided that we needed a 'disruptive factor', something that works against the usual 'harmonizing' the image in post production: I would start with a rough layout and he would re-arrange my shots in layers in a non-photographic way. I was only allowed a certain number of vetoes to his intrusions. It turned out to be quite liberating since the shots seem to be left in an unfinished state. Something I like in graphic art and certain paintings, but also something I rarely allow in my own photographic work. For more of the work of Ash Gibson, go to: www.artwordspictures.comFor more of mine, it's www.kaiwiechmann.com
