Madlib is a hip-hop producer also known as the Beat Konducta. Shades of Blue is a remix album, mixing hip-hop beats with samples from the archives of Blue Note Records, an American jazz record label.
The design pays homage to Reid Miles, who designed thousands of Blue Note Records cover artworks. Muted colour pallets and rectangle blocks influenced by Bauhaus design, and of course the music itself, served as reference points for this design.
