a layout design idea for a quarterly journal of philosophy
Before I became a graphic designer I earned a Master’s Degree in Philosophy. I generally think that philosophy is as similarly important science as physics or math - just as it was in ancient Greece. I think it should be part of our education system and also the basic literacy in the whole wide world. That’s why I chose philosophy as a subject of my very first layout design.
The story behind the concept:
Why philosophy?
Because everybody should know what the meaning of life is! :)

Why magazin?
When you think about philosophy, you can easily imagine heavy books what you don’t want to pick up at all. But a beautiful magazin can be a perfect company on the road, a trendy accessory of your identity.

I wanted to create a clear, well articulated, easy-to-digest design with a touch of humour.
Every philosopher got his/her own page, and a short story with his/her main messages in different boxes.
I used the negative version of the photos of philosophers because I wanted to emphasize their immortality and magnitude. (And - what a lucky coincidence! – it was the best decision to standardize the different quality images)
I didn’t use a lot of colors because I didn’t want to distract the reader from the content.
The main color couple: royal blue and pink can refer to the risograph print technique,
which can give to the magazine a fresh and young taste.
There are some original illustration for providing a break and separate the topics from each other.
