The Assumption of Gilda
Photomontage, reconstruction and retouch
Gilda was a cumbia singer/songwriter from Argentina who died in a tragic accident while touring in 1996.
Despite she was little known by most, the circumstances surrounding her death and claims by fans assuring she has "miraculous powers" awoken a sudden interest in her music. She has now reached iconic status in some South American countries and is devoted by many as a saint or martyr, even having her own sanctuary placed near the site of the accident which took her life.
This work is partly inspired by Esteban Murillo's Inmaculada Concepción and is title "La Asunción de Gilda" (The Assumption of Gilda).
