Lacerta bilineata (adult male)

Lacerta bilineata (common name: western green lizard).
The specific name of this reptile of the Lacertidae family derives from the fact that some adults show a linear pattern of 2-4 longitudinal stripes on the back; where this pattern is instead typical in youth.
In this case, the subject in question is an adult male.
Very different from the very common wall lizard (Podarcis muralis), first of all for the pattern, but above all for the dimensions: while the wall lizard can reach 230 mm in total length, the green lizard (male) can reach up to 450 mm.
It's a fairly common reptile (although in many anthropized areas it's less and less frequent) but despite this is included in Annex IV of the Habitats Directive and in Annex II of the Bern Convention, resulting protected as all other reptiles.
This specimen was photographed in northern Italy.
