Kendin Bas: opening screenprinting to the Turkish art market (2014)
Screenprinting is a printing technique that uses a fine mesh as a stencil to apply paint on various kinds of materials such as paper, fabrics, glass or steal. Freshly graduated from University, for a personal project, I looked for screen printing material in Istanbul to print T-shirts. It was difficult to find the small quantities of paint and material for my project since most of the sellers were only selling wholesale for the printing industry.
By chance, I found a willing seller that sold me screens, painting and emulsion. I was hired as well in the same time to develop their next product: building a kit to teach children screenprinting. I was in charge of testing products and develop the online shop.
In two months, we iterated on two versions of the kit, created a packaging, and a website (kendinbas.net) and partnerships with physical shops to sell it.
Finally, the product did not meet the market for two reasons: it was a quality product, but its pricing was high on the creative market, and screenprinting is a delicate job that is difficult to simplify. The website is however profitable, selling to artists screenprinting material in small quantities, with confortable margins.
You can find below a gallery with a picture of the kit, and its content, two screenshots of the website (landing page and product page, with a classical design back in 2014), an illustration that I did about the print on demand screens, where you can submit your own project. Finally, the last tow photos are about user testings.
