The Electric Guitar Archive

Rationale

This project is to produce a book based on a man made object. I chose the electric guitar as my object. The fonts I chose for the book are Helvetica Neue for the contents of the book and Bebas  Neue for the cover title. I chose Helvetica Neue for the contents of the book because of it's huge family. It's a versatile font with many different weights, this allowed me to play around more and also distinguish important information better. I chose Bebas Neue for the cover because it was a modern and bold looking font which went well with my object.

My concept and idea was to take the reader through the eyes of a guitar luthier / builder. I planned to do this by taking shots of guitars that my friend who was and is a guitar builder was building, I took shots from how a guitar was made from scratch and complete guitar. I also included wiring diagrams and anatomy diagrams that we guitarists use when customizing our gear. After that I took photos of my own guitars to use them as my cover.

Next step was to get all the information, I dug out the introduction, history, anatomy, variations of electric guitars, and the types of music that the electric guitar was significant in. After compiling the information I proceeded to plan my grid system and layouts. I went with a modular grid system. As for binding I went with perfect binding. I chose sirocco as my contents paper and a shiny paper for my covers to help bring out the photography.

In addition to information on guitar building, different guitars etc, I also included other areas of guitar playing like the different effects used by guitarists to produce different sounds and also different genres of music where the guitar is the main instrument.

*Credits due to some of the photography used in this project which was taken by builders and owners.
