World Book Day is celebrated worldwide to recognize the scope of books as a link between the past and the future, along with being a cultural and generational bridge. . The idea to observe World Book Day was first conceived by Valencian writer Vicente Clavel Andres as a means to honor the renowned author, Miguel de Cervantes, on his death anniversary, April 23. UNESCO then decided that World Book Day would be celebrated on April 23 annually, since this date is also the death anniversary of prominent authors such as William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. . Also, April 23rd is observed as English Language Day, every year. The day was established by the UNESCO in 2010 to celebrate the English language and multilingualism. English Language Day marks the birthday and date of death of famed writer William Shakespeare.
