Kristina Wilck | 90's baby

90's baby is a brand meant to be a fun, nostalgic experience that shows how trends come back around. Taking colors, type, and shapes that spoke to that vintage 90's palette, I created a consistent look for the brand.

My goal was a timeline of products reflecting the toys a 90's baby played with as a child, cosmetics wanted in their early teen years, and clothes that an adult 90's baby wants currently because they have come back in style but still feel personal.

Focusing on packaging and product design, most objects were created using 3D shapes in Adobe Dimension and illustrations done in Adobe Illustrator. The universal story I focused on was that when a trend comes back around it makes you feel connected to your past. Instances of nostalgia make you feel as if your timeline is both rewinding and playing forward simulataneously.

90's baby is youthful, nostalgic, fun, and energetic.

TOYS - CHILDHOOD
mini movie machine

One of my favorite toys growing up was my View-Master. I thought it would be the perfect way to incorporate packaging and illustrations.

The theme for this product is "play" so I illustrated the images to tell a story of two girls asking each other to play, then some of the things they might have played with.

prism vision

Wanting a toy that allowed me to play with shapes, particularly triangles which represent the three stages of my timeline, I chose to design a kaleidoscope.

Building it in Adobe Dimension, I was able to produce a reflective effect.

sprung

Taking the name from the lyric of Baby Got Back, I designed this slinky packaging to look like a Furby. The slinky around the outside is used as a textural element to create the look of the fur. For the display, I mimiced the most recognizable form of play which is sending the slinkies down a set of stairs.

COSMETICS - TEEN YEARS
the ONLY palette

What's more 90's than blue eyeshadow? The name of this product is a play on the fact that the only color of eyeshadow worn in the 90's was blue. This trend definitely and unfortunately impacted my early years.

Wanting to make a sleeve for this eyeshadow palette, I came up with the idea to make it look like a VHS tape and sleeve. I have many fond memories of poppin a tape into my VCR TV combo to watch my favorite movies over and over.

lava gloss

Every one of my friends, me included, had a lava lamp in their room when we were younger and I wanted these products to be interactive so I researched and found out that lava lamp lip gloss is possible.

This illustration I did for the inside of the box draws attention to the center of the image, focusing on the gloss of the lips and lollipop while creating a fun typographic visual.

stardust

Pop stars like Britney Spears rocked the stage covered in body glitter. Even if I couldn't sing like her, I believed I could look like her if I bathed myself in enough glitter. For this design I focused on the display, making it look like a stage so the body glitters themselves would look like pop stars performing.

CLOTHES - ADULTHOOD
jean jacket and tees

There's nothing better than trends from your childhood coming back and better than ever. My favorite 90's trends are denim on denim and cropped graphic tees.

scrunchies

What other way is there for a 90's baby to tie up their hair?

chunky sneakers

Everyone could use a lift sometimes and a graphic lifted shoe always.

after effects videos

Here are some 90's-themed videos I put together in after effects including a logo intro, lava lamp scene, and clueless title sequence.

thank you

This 2020 AIGA Orlando Mentorship has been an incredible experience. I am so grateful to have been a part of it and especially grateful to Steve Carsella for all the time he dedicated to helping me craft the project.

Thank you for checking out 90's baby. Don't forget to give it a thumbs up if you liked it!
