McKenzie Estes's profile

McKenzie B. Estes - AIGA Mentorship 2020

Mental health is a topic employers, schools, and families don't openly discuss. With about 40 million adults suffering from anxiety and 17.3 million adults suffering from depression in the United States, mental health awareness should be a topic of discussion.

As someone who lives with both anxiety and depression, I am very open about my journey as I navigate my way through life. I've learned positive ways to cope with my symptoms. As a designer, I have the opportunity to use my talents to bring awareness to the topic and help other people like me who are also living with mental health disorders. I illustrated, hand-lettered, and designed the sayings I tell myself when I am feeling anxious or depressed.

The people I can count on when I am feeling anxious and depressed are my fiance and my twin brother and his wife (my best friend). We typically have dinner, pop open a bottle of wine and talk. We coined the saying "cheap wine & quality time" (you will see this saying designed further down the page). Moments like these help pull me through the hard times, which is why I used them as inspiration to design positive stickers, shirts, enamel pins, and posters.  Hopefully, these fun, positive designs will help bring reassurance to others who are suffering from anxiety and depression and shine some light on a dark topic.

it's OKAY to ask for help
it's OKAY to be prescribed medication
it's OKAY to be open about your mental health journey

With everything going on in the world today, like Covid-19, it's important to stay mentally aware and healthy. I've included resources at the bottom of the page if you or someone you know may be suffering from anxiety and depression.

resources
Managing your anxiety and depression can sound exhausting at first. The research and options may feel overwhelming, which is why I've compiled some incredible resources and helpful links if you or someone you know is dealing with anxiety and depression.

Even if you don't typically suffer from anxiety and depression, events like the COVID-19 can cause stress, anxiety, and depression in anyone. If you need temporary help and guidance to navigate through this difficult time, some of these resources may be helpful to you too.
