The Goal: Puppy Animation

The Goal: Animation
Starting in Illustrator
To make my animation in Adobe After Effects, I started by creating my assets in Adobe Illustrator. It was very important that each piece that would have movement be on a separate layer. This was a new way of designing than I was used to. It was also important that they were all named in a way that could be easily distinguished when the file was transferred to After Effects.
Final Assets
Drafts
My first draft was very slow. It looked robotic and felt slow motion. This was something that I knew I wanted to change.
For my second draft, I fixed the rotation of the ball. I also fixed the gap around the head of the dog. I added a background to make it more interesting.
Final
In the end, I was able to make the dog sit down, stand up, run off screen, come back, and sit back down. There was a lot of learning about distancing of keyframes to create speed that looked natural. There was a large learning curve for me, but I was able to create something I am proud of.
