Theìa: Your smart sleeping and waking up system

The following project was developed during the Master Degree in "Design Sistemico A. Peccei" at the Politecnico di Torino, during the semester of Design by Components in collaboration with the Fab Lab network.

The concept of Theìa, a smart sleeping system, derives from two main research phases: one focused on the scenario represented by Casa Jasmina, domestic and open source house based in Turin, mainly concerning the characteristics of its two bedrooms, and the other based on the analysis of scientific reports about sleep.

The prototype project is based on Eos - smart roller blind concept to realise it in details with an open source approach.

The project has been developed in order to be manufactured mainly by users belonging to the makers community, using rapid prototyping tools (3D printers and laser cutting machines) usually available in makerspace such as FabLab. However, this factor does not narrow down the users to makers only, in fact they can assume the role of producers on behalf of non-expert users interested in im- proving their sleep quality. The project approach is open, which implies that they can be modified and improved by the final users.

The smart roller blind is controlled via its own app, that allows the user to set the deisired wake up time and to control the actuated back blind. It also offers bedtime forecast and sleep cycles suggestion to improve the overall sleep quality.

The app is based on the MQTT connectivity protocol and can be integrated with datas from other smart devices (like FitBit and Beddit) through APIs, creating new possibilities.

The product is specifically designed for makers and for an open distribution and a DIY approach. The whole project pack is available online, and includes the components list, the fully-customizable 3D model, .dxf files for laser-cut and .obj files for 3D printed parts. It also includes the electronic diagram and, of course, the code.
