Thomas DeFranzo's profile

Red Sox Sign Veteran Pitcher Collin McHugh

Prince Tech alumnus Thomas “Tommy” DeFranzo has owned and operated a hot rod shop in Windsor, Connecticut, since 2011. Outside his professional pursuits, Thomas DeFranzo enjoys following professional sports. He counts the Boston Red Sox as his favorite Major League Baseball (MLB) team.

The Red Sox added depth to its pitching rotation on March 5 by signing veteran free agent Collin McHugh to a one-year, $600,000 contract with performance-based bonuses that could see him earn more than $3 million. The 32-year-old right-handed pitcher won a World Series with the Houston Astros in 2017, and has a career win-loss record of 53-48 to go along with a 3.95 earned run average (ERA) and 771 strikeouts in 800-and-two-third innings pitched.

McHugh's best season came in 2015, when he finished eighth in American League Cy Young voting. He finished that season with a 19-7 record in addition to a 3.89 ERA and 171 strikeouts. He has been used primarily in a relief role in the past three seasons, but could start for the Red Sox in 2020 due to its relative lack of starting pitcher depth.

Boston traded starter David Price to the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier in the off-season, while Chris Sale is expected to miss time due to an elbow injury.
