BirdHouse Project

Possibly one of my favorite projects thus far, The BirdHouse Project challenged me to push past boundaries I did not think I could accomplish. The prompt for this project was to create a birdhouse in 3 point perspective. I started by cerebrating a bird that had unique characteristics that I could amplify in my drawing. I ended up choosing the hummingbird. The hummingbird is one of the fastest and smallest birds in the Americas. Their average speed is about 50 mph and they cannot walk or hop with their legs. In other words, these little birds are the nascar drivers of the animal kingdom. So, branching off that idea, I decided to construct a hummingbird figure eight race track. The idea is that the bird would enter and exit in the back of the figure eight intersection. The hummingbird would then have the ability to fly freely in and out of the track without having to stop. To begin  sketching I started with two 3 point rectangles in which I could inscribe toruses. My sketches were not doing justice to the vision I had in my head. Toruses are difficult to draw, and even more so in 3 point perspective, but I was motivated to see to the finish. I continued with a process that was just not giving me the outcome I had hoped for. After many trials ended with disappointment I re-strategized. The next process I tried was to begin with a 3 point rectangle that I inscribed with another smaller rectangle to give it a hollowed-out look. Then I began creating the figure eight by cross contouring the rectangles into round cylindrical shapes. Cross contour was a process I learned in observational drawing and is an incredibly handy skill when rendering organic and cylindrical shapes. If I could do this project all over again I don't think I would change much. Although, finding a new strategy took more trials than I had hoped for, the process taught me what I am capable of doing.
