子、醜、寅、卯、辰、巳、午、未、申、酉、戌、亥，分別與十二生肖對應。 十二地支用來表示四個季、年、月、時辰。同時大地具有方向性，所以地支又用來表示方向。依佛典所載，十二地支對應的十二支神將在晝夜十二時辰、四季十二月份，輪流率領眷屬守護眾生，其守護的眾生的時辰剛好是從子時到亥時的十二支。
