Ja eller nej? Det är upp till dig och mig: A project about integration and personal integrity.
The Red Cross facilitate workshops all over Sweden, with the goal of helping people understand each other and cultural differences. This specific project aimed to highlight how norms between different cultures can create misunderstandings. Do’s and dont’s regarding personal integrity differ between cultures. A peck on the check can be seen as a totally innocent action of affection or a breach of personal integrity, it all depends on the context.
Not using colors was a conscious choice to enhance the feeling inclusion. By using black and white you leave the interpretation up to the viewer and don’t force them in to a conclusion, instead you put the user into the drivers-seat and let them create their own meaning. All illustration where connected in procreate and sketchbook pro. The final illustrations were created in illustrator.
My first assignment for this project was to create a visual tool-kit for the workshops. Each illustration meant to be used a visual aid, when talking about personal integrity. The challenge here was to create a visual concept that felt inclusive, diverse and relatable. By removing as much as possible from each illustration and making them as simple as possible, I was able to create something that everyone can relate to.
After a successful first assignment, Red Cross contacted me a year later to further develop the workshop concept. They wanted me to create an animated introduction using the same visual style as the visual tool-kit. Together with the Red Cross and a voice actor I created a four minute video about norms, cultural context and personal integrity. The concept for the video was to make themes and illustrations morph from one topic into the next. By doing this I managed to create a fluid narrative that felt natural, even though the video covers a wide variety of topics. All the illustrations were created in illustrator and animated in after effects.
