The Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) is the world’s leading organization for the training of scuba divers in the US and internationally. One of the courses offered by PADI is the beginner Scuba Diver course, which is given as a subset for the more extensive course, PADI Open Water Diver.

To enroll in the PADI Scuba Diver course, the student must be at least ten years old. Although no prior experience with scuba diving is required, the individual needs to have suitable swimming skills.

The course is divided into three different phases. The first phase can be undertaken through independent study, eLearning, or in a classroom. The second phase of the PADI Scuba Diver course is taken in confined waters such as a pool, in which the student learns basic scuba skills in three dives. The third and last phase happens in open waters when the students use their skills and explore with the instructor in two dives.
