Climb the mountain - Flat Design Journey

Helping a charity with beginner skills and a lot of motivation
During my training as a Web Developer I had the chance to work together with Octavia, a fellow trainee, for a charity in Scotland. They help people who hear voices, self-harm and those who support them. We had to rebuild the charity's website from scratch and they kindly left us free rein except for the colours, so I thought it was a good idea to recreate everything. Their old website had nature scenery illustrations, so we kept the idea of nature due to its sense of peace and calm, and that's what we wanted the user to feel when they arrive on the website.

The main issue was, neither Octavia or myself had experience with illustrator, but she draws pretty well, so I thought it was a good opportunity to get my hands dirty and learn Illustrator. With the mix of her skills and mine we had a chance to create something decent, sometimes from quick ideas sketched on a bit of paper. I wanted to focus specifically on creating flat designs from the sketches and took a few online courses.

Being a beginner, the flat design is basic but I'm quite proud of the result achieved after a mere few weeks of studying flat design. I consider myself more as a web developer than a designer, and I see graphic design as a hobby that I try to mix with my work. This way I can be more flexible and offer designs tailored to the needs of my clients.
