In the evening before the Spring Festival ,families get together and have a big meal .The annual New Year's Eve dinner is extremely important for Chinese people.After the New Year's dinner,the whole family sits together chatting, waiting for the time of leaving the old and welcoming the new, and watches all night, symbolizing that all evil plagues and epidemics will be run away, expecting the good luck of the new year.
In the morning of the first day of the New Year,Everybody wears new clothes and brings New Year greetings and congratulations on the coming year to their relatives. The elders should distribute New Year's money prepared in advance to the younger generation.It is said that New Year's money can suppress evil spirits, and the younger generation can live safely through the year.
Chinese people will worship the God of Fortune on the 5th day of Chinese New Year.They will shoot off firecrackers in the attempt to get the attention of the god of fortune, thus ensuring his favor and good fortune for the whole new year.
The Lantern Festival is celebrated everywhere on January 15th of the lunar calendar. Traditionally, the Lantern Festival is a part of the Spring Festival.People celebrate by hanging up lanterns, attending Lion dancing, eating “Yuan Xiao” which is made with glutinous rice flour as the outside,different kinds of fruit kernels and sugar as the inside.
