This photo-story is about a rubbish collector. Living in Johannesburg we regularly see people like him digging in dustbins - but this is often as much as many of us will ever get to know them. This is the point where our thought processes tend to stop, and my project begins at this point. Alasdair Walton (who is a friend of mine, and a writer) and I got together to create a photo story. We chose this genre because we wanted to give a face to one of the rubbish collectors we pass every day. We aimed to learn more about some of these guys, and the different lives they lead. We met many rub- bish collectors, over the course of the day – all of them with their own story leading them to the point where they are at now. This photo story shows a portion of a day in the life of one of them.
