Three Inspiring Challenges for Creative Writers

Following his work as an operation and financial analyst, Matthew Sapienza of La Grange Park, Illinois, took on a role as the director of financial planning and analytics with the Loyola University Health System. When not involved in his professional duties, Matthew Sapienza enjoys creative writing.

Many creative writers participate in timed writing challenges to gain inspiration and overcome writer’s block. Below are several Internet-based challenges designed especially for fiction writers:

NaNoWriMo: For more than two decades, writers have celebrated National Novel Writing Month in November by aiming to complete a 50,000-word novel by the end of the month. Hundreds of thousands of creatives take part in the event every year and may receive a free printed copy of their book as a reward.

The 30-Day Writing Challenge: Developed by the proofreading site Scribendi, the 30-day challenge offers writers a daily creative writing prompt. Unlike NaNoWriMo, this challenge has no ideal word count, so participants can write as much or as little as they like.

Flash Fiction: Publicized by fiction writer and educator Eva Deverell, the Flash Fiction challenge encourages writers to reduce wordiness by limiting their short stories to less than 1,000 words. Deverell provides 100 challenge prompts on her webpage.
