Frantz Kantor Hairspray Set Design

Frantz Kantor sets the scene for Hairspray

One of the best things about managing Illustrators has to be the infinite range of briefs that we can work on. The set design for the new musical, Hairspray is a perfect example.
Illustration is omnipotent. If a person has a vision that they would like another person to see, then showing them a picture is the most vivid way to get them to see things the same way.

This makes illustration relevant to almost all creative industries. In this case it was the musical theatre industry.
The bright pop themes of the seventies in hyper-colour palettes were not the only aspects of this brief that made it perfect for Frantz Kantor. The brief required someone to work with the Director and Set Designer to understand and visually articulate just what they had in mind. Then in order to bring the concepts to life the imagery had to work as giant mural backdrops, flash animations and in a 3D environment.

A long career driven by a huge imagination has meant that Frantz Kantor has worked in almost every illustration medium for almost every media to date all so that we can see what he has in mind. This experience also puts him at the top of his game when it comes to sharing what someone else has in mind.

Special thanks also to Kaye Cook who managed the project. Set design was previously something she hadn’t worked on before but Kaye stayed on top of the job like she’d been doing it for years.
