Kathryn Owens's profile

Lindenwood University Capstone

“Our experience is governed by pictures, pictures in newspapers and magazines, on television and in the cinema. Next to these pictures, firsthand experience begins to retreat, to seem more and more trivial While it once seemed that pictures had the function of interpreting reality, it now seems that they have usurped it.”
—Douglas Crimp
Jumping head first into a project you discover quickly if it will sink or swim, but first you have to gather research.
Once you know where your story is going to take place you then have to figure out how to get the images in your head onto paper.
I found that sketches were the best way to hammer out character details. Not just how they were going to look, but also their personalities. The more I drew them the more I could piece together how they would react to different situations.
During that period of learning who my characters are, some of their designs changed drastically while others kept to a similar theme.
Though the full comic wasn't produced for this project, the story will progress, as the residents of Haven discover they are not who they think they are. As I press on in production of this graphic novel the additions will be kept digital, until I can complete the whole story.
To be continued...
