Modern Girls – Groovy Cheong Sam Fashion Illustration

This piece celebrates the cheong sam dress, which since its redesign in the 1930s (20s?) has been a vision of modernity – featuring both Chinese and Western tailoring. The clean lines of the silhouette, mandarin collar, and diagonal fastening make this a sophisticated and unique dress, with a bit of sensuality owing to the side slit but! It is by no means an overly exotic and sexual dress, which I think, unfortunately, has been misinterpreted by some not fully aware of the culture and history behind it all. So! Let's hope for a future with more mutual understanding, respect, and genuine appreciation, one where cultural sharing and exchange becomes more equal, fun & open!⁣⁣

⁣⁣The motifs adorning the dress have also evolved over time, and now it's not uncommon to see less "traditional" patterns (think of Maggie Cheung in In The Mood for Love). It is why I chose to go the more psychedelic route with this, always looking and dreaming into the future.⁣⁣
