Mid November PSDCC Photoshop & LightRoom
with Terry White
Day 1: Photo Editing
Import, arrange and perform basic edits on an image in Lightroom. When you are finished, try exporting your image.
This was edited entirely in LR Classic, including the divot at the bottom.I took it with my cell phone on top mod the dryer. I thought this cluster of maple seeds looked interesting, especially the unusual colors. I'm showing both the original and finished edit (with vignette)
Day 2: Crop Tool
Adjust the composition of an image using the crop tool in Lightroom or Photoshop.
I took this night long exposure of a local museum on a trip through PS from and to LR Classic. There are three images in this set: the original before any adjustments (right); the mid-point after adjustments (basic and upright) ready to send to PS for content aware fill and HSL adjustments with some healing (middle); and the final copy (left).
Day 3: Geometry Adjustments
Straighten a scene using geometry adjustments in Lightroom or Photoshop.
This lacy dress is an example of the unusual 3-D sculpting from artist Lisa Hermesmeyer in St. Clair. I took photos with my phone of her solo exhibition at the Art Center in order to make a slide show for SCAA's display TV. The right image is straight out of the camera. The image on theft is after LR Class adjustments, including guided transform. It fixed the display boards, but now the torso looks crooked. Yikes!
Day 4: Black & White Photo
Convert an image to black and white using Lightroom or Photoshop.
This is an image I took of the fountain in the Plaza near the Art Center. It's called "Two Ships Passing" and designed by Dave Fry, one of the SCAA members. You can see the St. Clair river in the background, and on the far side of the river is Canada. In Michigan, there are many place one has to go east to get to Canada ;-)
Day 5: Text Tool
Add text to a photograph using Photoshop.
My first attempt using the image to color the text. It's nice. I like the shading that the cloudy sky gives the letters.
My second attempt using the image to color the text. Using the water reflection really makes the text pop!
Day 6: Color Adjustments
Adjust image color using Curves and the HSL Panel in Lightroom or Photoshop.
This image of the back side of a Canadian casino was taken about 10:30 one late spring evening. At this pants, it's been through Lightroom and into Photoshop. I duplicated the layer, added a blur from the blur gallery and cranked up the bokeh and color. I make the blurred layer so just the lights would show by selecting the highlights in the RGB channel and using levels on the mask so only the lightest colors would show through. Below you can see the original image and what it looked like just before I edited in PS. You can see why I wanted to add some more POP! to the image.
I also decided to work on the image that Terry White provided as as starting image. Even thou it was a jpg image, I managed to pull a lot of details in the ACR filter, and did more adjusting with  HSL, levels and curve layers.
Day 7: Remove Object
Remove distracting objects from a photo using Lightroom and Photoshop.
Documenting another Dave Fry sculpture outside the riverside door at the Art Center. Phone lens is so wide angle and I couldn't completely get rid if distortion. And with heavy traffic at my back I couldn't get farther away. Original (right) and after the the trip thru ACR (left) before PS are shown below.
Day 8: Local Adjustments
Improve a photograph with local adjustments. Try using brush controls with a Graduated Filter or Radial Filter.
Since I'm running behind today, I used Terry White's starting image for my local adjustments. As you can see my lighthouse keeper's wife is quite the gardener and she keeps him busy mowing the grass and painting the roof. I chose a greener lagoon. I though the image needed something to really catch your attention, so I added a blue whale from Pixel Squid. ;-)
Day 9: Combine Images
Combine two or more images using Layers in Photoshop.
The leprechaun. pot of gold with rainbow sky and rolling grassy hills are all AdobeStock images. I used dawn clouds from Unsplash to add more texture to a dull sky. I also duplicated the rainbow only with a soft light overlay. I struggled with shadows as none of the images see to have strong light source, but both the pot and leprechaun and strong shadows before I started. I lowered the opacity on both, and fit the figures into the gras with a masked using, surprise, the grass brush. I also evened out the lighting on the leprechaun and grass to fit better with the gray sky behind.
