DevConf.cz Visual Identity

New Visual Identity for DevConf.cz

Red Hat community is organizing an open source conference DevConf.cz in Brno. It is an annual conference for around 1700 tech enthusiast from all over the world. We joined the team and helped with updating its visual identity.
It is going to be the 12th year of DevConf.cz and we grabbed the opportunity to update the visual identity and create a branding package for the whole conference.
Design Process & Design Exploration

Learning from the community
We knew we could not do this on our own. DevConf.cz is alive for already 12 years and it had already a strong community around it. We wanted to understand the overall look and feel for the event, and we were able to understand it with several rounds of interactive sessions.

We asked and answered questions
What is Brno known for?
What is DevConf known for?
How does it feel for people to arrive here and what do they take away with them?

Keeping the logo and DevConf purple
We knew that we don’t want to start from the beginning as there were already some distinct symbols - color and logo, that DevConf was known for.

Teamwork is the dream work
I can’t describe how much fun it was to run design session where we worked together but then divided into small groups, regrouped again, shared ideas, critiqued, then build on the ideas of others. We saw many design ideas to die but then some made it to the next iterations. I enjoyed the energy and enthusiasm everyone brought in.

Designing in the open
We definitely took advantage of open collaboration. We gathered feedback from the community, shared progress, made design decisions and then moved into the next iterations.

Below you can see some of the early explorations then evolved into the final piece.
Devconf.cz is happening in Brno January 24-26, 2020, mark your calendars and we hope to see you here!
