Pale Blue Dot
A Vision of the Human Future in Space
by Carl Sagan

––

Space has been a special interest of mine for quite a while. I rented an apartment with a friend of mine a while back who also happens to be an astrophysicist. During this time my interest grew even more, as there is plenty of information to go around. Among other things, he introduced me to the work of Carl Sagan and his book, The Pale Blue Dot. This particular section of the book has made it to countless inspirational videos and lectures but I couldn't help but think about it and how I could pay tribute to this remarkable speech through the skills I've gathered throughout my career.

I wanted to keep it simple, yet interesting at the same time. I wanted to give his words the full stage, no background music, no sound effects and minimal use of colour. Space is bigger than most people can fathom and I wanted to try and make it visual through typography. The occasional use of illustrations were needed to grab the viewers attention to which I have to thank my very talented friend, Kristján Lyngmo, an animator and illustrator from Iceland. I suggest you check out his other work via his Instagram.

The only picture used in the video is the one taken by NASA on Sagan's request, from Voyager 1 on February 14th 1990 from a distance of 6 billion kilometres. This picture is essentially what the video is about and what inspired Sagan's book.
