Design as Observation Collage Project

When we first got the assignment to take three different photos of six different objects, I was a little stumped what I should pick. A few days later, I was doing some work for another class and was eating a few pieces of chocolate when I finally got an idea. I started my collection of photos by taking three different photos of a piece of chocolate. From there I realized I had a bunch of other food snacks in my dorm room that would be good candidates for other items to photograph. Since all the items are food items, when putting them together in a collage, they don't seem out of place.

Instead of photographing the items on any random background, I put them in front of some colored folders I had lying around, to make the photos seem less cluttered. This helped to keep the focus on the six different foods I picked only, and not something else behind them. This also helped when isolating the foods in Photoshop later. These snack items were very easy to get and photograph which was helpful. Finally most of them had a simple shape to them, with varying colors, which was useful when making the collages.
In the first collage, I created some blossoming Cherry trees, with the trunks made out of chocolate and the leaves from lollipops. While this collage looks the simplest out of the three, it took the longest, since I had to duplicate the food items many times.
For the second collage, I opted to create a complex symmetrical pattern made from these snacks. I used the photos of chocolate, pretzels, and peanuts for this one.
The final collage is a collection of patterns made out of candy. The photos of the Life Savers, lollipops, and Twizzlers were all used to make this possible. The lines of Twizzlers help to keep the collage organized and provide some order.
