Rapid Eye Movement
A dream is a succession of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that usually occur involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. Although dreams have been a topic of interest in science, philosophy, and religion throughout History, the content and purpose of dreams are still not fully understood. REM is a book that combines the work of four photographers whose work allow to build a dream narrative.

Dreams mainly occur during the rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep. During this stage, brain activity is high and is similar to being awake. The length of a dream can vary from a few seconds to around half an hour.

A person is more likely to remember a dream if awakened during the REM phase. During a full eight hour night sleep, most dreams occur in the typical two hours of REM. The average person has three to five dreams per night; however, most dreams are quickly forgotten. Dreams tend to last longer as the night progresses. Dreams related to real life experiences are associated with the REM phase, suggesting that emotional memory processing takes place during REM sleep.
