DESIGN AS OBSERVATION

DESIGN AS OBSERVATION
Textiles, t-shirts, and tapestries are the woven pieces
we adorn our beds and bodies with. Whether cotton or wool,
these linens we keep at home are signature to our style and aesthetic, often representing who we are and where we’ve come from. The sheets on your mattress remind you of cold winter nights, and the stripes on your button-down have faded since your last shopping spree; everyone’s woven collection is a tangible representation of who they are as a creative, a father, or a business woman, simply stated: “to each his own”.
When packing up my loft at home, I knew there was no way I was going to fit everything I wanted to bring to campus in the closet sized bedroom I am currently living in. A more confined space meant more precise choices when deciding on what to pack, and forced me to reflect further on what objects I kept at home that meant enough to not leave behind. This collection I have started for the “Design as Observation” project is made up of the textiles, t-shirts, and tapestries that took the trek with me to UConn, and I believe are a decent representation of my personal style and expression.

1. Inspired by magazine "flatlay" style photos, this collage utilizes every image from the collection and is an attempt at rebuilding the shirts and pants photographed.

2. Breaking down the individual images to their most basic structure, this collage weaves together the textiles photographed above to construct an entirely new textile itself.

3. This whimsical scene of a sailboat making its way across the ocean contrasts the simplicity of my original images with a greater/more complex statement.
