Often described as underwater rainforests, coral reefs support a quarter of all marine species, as well as half a billion people around the world. Reefs also form crucial barriers which protect coastlines from the full force of storms. The health of the planet depends on this!
However, the world has lost roughly half of it's coral reefs in the last 30 years. Scientists expect that these unique ecosystems will not survive beyond the next three decades. More than 90 percent of coral reefs could die by 2050. Coral reefs are vulnerable to climate change and are suffering from rising ocean temperatures and acidification, as well as from pollution, over-fishing, coastal development and agricultural runoff.

RIP CORAL REEFS aims to raise awareness about coral bleaching. This work shows us an unavoidable fact that we will face in a few decades if we do not take action now.
We have lost 50 percent of the reefs in the past 30 years, but that means that we still have 50 percent left to protect. As a first way to curb damage, I suggest expressing our condolences to the dead coral reefs. By cherishing the memory of them, we could truly motivate the protection of the remaining coral reefs.
