Unlike the methods for preserving analog documents that have been honed over millennia, there is no deep precedence to look to regarding the management of digital records. As such, the processing, long-term storage, and distribution potential of archival digital data are highly unresolved issues. Digital archiving is at best a rapidly developing project, drawing on past practices and borrowing them forward when possible. Despite careful preservation, analog documents will slowly and inevitably die to physical decay, digital formats might seem an ideal alternative for long-term archival data storage.
In this digital age, corporates like google have assumed the responsibility of archiving data of billions of people, with consent or not, this archival is in process since many years. After looking at my personal data of google maps of 4 years, starting from year 2016 till today, I was able to map out my every day routines in a single visual. This raw data could convey information about that specific day but I wanted to categorize and analyze data in big chunks to draw a holistic comparison between years.
This led me to access my google account to capture images of my daily activity. Acquiring images one by one being a tedious process, so it was automated via macro software. At the end I was able to capture around 1500 images of time and date stamped data from 2016-2019. These acquired visuals were stacked onto each other to construct a year’s activity. Each blue line represents a day’s activity, when combined together, these overlapping visuals constitute a form of my yearly evolving foot prints.
