LIFE OF PI STAND-UP

Life of Pi is a coming-of-age novel by Yann Martel about a boy named Pi who survives 227 days after a shipwreck. Stranded on the sea, his only companion is Bengal tiger Richard Parker, who he must condition to see him as an ally and not food. The ordeal transforms Pi into a person with great strength and willpower, and the story has notable themes of spirituality, survival, and personal growth.

ABOUT PROJECT
MOVIE THEATER-STYLE STANDEE
For the Great Books Project at a university library, stand-ups with a "movie theater poster" look were created. This Life of Pi piece stands at 4 feet x 6.5 feet / 1.2 meters x 2 meters. It is divided into three levels: a triangular base, the foreground, and the ocean backdrop. Tiled pages were trimmed and put together, then attached to cardboard bases, which got cut to size. The stand-up was entirely completed by hand, and a triangular support structure fixed to the backdrop holds it in place.

In creating the design, important imagery was lifted from the book: the sea setting, boat, and island. An overhead view of the Pacific Ocean is staged, with part of the island that Pi discovers peeking out at the bottom. The face of a tiger lies within the waves.
