The Yellow Wallpaper

The Yellow Wallpaper is a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. It's about a young mother who is prescribed the 'rest cure' for her depression, which requires her to be stimulation-free for a long period of time. During her confinement she becomes obsessed with the yellow wallpaper in her room, eventually going insane.
I wanted to depict the woman's slow descent into insanity through illustration. I also wanted to mimic the way wallpaper tears when it's being ripped off of walls. I also layered the image on the front and back to allude to the woman the main character sees crawling around behind the wallpaper.
The typography is very traditional to evoke the late 1800s, which is when this story was published. The final spread of images represents the many women who were put on the rest cure, including the author, who wrote The Yellow Wallpaper in order to reveal how horrible this treatment really was.
