The Young Ones Competition

This project was created for The Young Ones Competition held by the One Club. I worked with Mitzi Vial to create these three print ads for the competition's client, Pencils of Promise.
The idea centers around the idea that sometimes all you need is a change in your perspective to change the world. Pencils of Promise is an organization that collaborates with underdeveloped countries to bring quality education to the communities. This foundation has transformed beyond a simple money-giving charity, and as a result, we created ads that must be transformed in order to understand their full meaning.
At first glance, the hand appears to be begging for money, or asking for a hand out. But the sideways text forces the viewer to turn the page to a landscape format in order to see that the hand represents a handshake, not a handout. This hand could represent POP collaborating with the communities, as well as collaborating with people who want to help. The handshake could also signify the hand of the communities, who are transformed from people who need assitance, into self-sustainined and educated partners.
In this ad, the first page you would see if you were flipping through a magazine says simply, " What can a penny do?" After you flip the page to the following spread, you realize a single penny's full potential if only everyone would contribute a penny.
Here, the first image you would see if you were flipping through a magazine would be a picture of a downtrodden girl who appears to be working. The gray flap in front emphasizes this by stating, "We don't do charity work." However, after the flap is turned over, the girl is revealed to be drawing in school, and the finishing statement of "we make long-tern investments" really hits home the fact that these children are the future for these communities, and POP understands they need to be taught, instead of just given donations.
