Gordon Yang's profile

Rapid Prototyping

In ME102A: Introduction to Mechanical Systems for Mechatronics, I had the opportunity to design via CAD, rapid prototype using 3D printers, lab test and evaluate the performance of mechanical components and sub-systems used in mechatronic systems. Shown below is my work over the course of the semester.

Team Members: Gordon Yang, Sherry Lee

A one-piece, polymer bending test apparatus according to the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) materials test standard D6272-10, with the exception of the top piece being simply supported. Tested deflection by loading the apparatus on its top face.
Shown on the top piece are resolution wedges, printed for the purpose of measuring where the worst case resolution of the 3D printers used to make the prototype occurs. Measured to be 0.25 mm.

An automobile chassis. Tested the mass to stiffness ratio through loading the chassis on the top center. Project required space be made for a driver.
The driver:

A four-bar mechanism that can be operated with two modes of operation: 1. With four pin joints. 2. With 2 pin joints, and 2 flexure joints. Tested the accuracy between the two modes of operation through the measurement of x-y positions with string potentiometers.
