Artist's Statement:
The purpose of this typographic PSA piece is to educate viewers about the harm unsustainable palm oil production is doing to orangutans and their habitat and to inform viewers how they can be more responsible consumers by using the Sustainable Palm Oil Shopping App created by the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. I strove to create a piece that connects emotionally with viewers and communicates the urgency of the problem without falling into a melodramatic or depressing tone. I utilized a color scheme inspired by the app to tie the PSA to the existing mobile app.
Production Explanation:
The conservation of orangutans is a cause that is very dear to me. In order to lend my creative and technical skills to the cause, I contacted the Palm Oil Crisis team at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo; with their permission, I created a PSA video promoting their Sustainable Palm Oil Shopping App. I designed this piece with a square aspect ratio so that it can be easily shared on social media platforms. That posed new compositional challenges for me and the style of animation pushed my skills and facilitated my learning of new animation techniques in After Effects.
