A shuriken is a traditional Japanese concealed weapon generally used for throwing, but often both throwing and stabbing. They are sharpened, hand-held blades created from a variety of items such as needles, nails, and knives but also extend to coins, washers, and other pieces of flat metal. Commonly referred to as throwing stars, or ninja stars.

Creating the Shuriken typeface involves three main shapes. Some of the letterforms may use all of the shapes, while some may only use one.
