Funeral chapel Prague "Řepy"

Submission for public architectural competition for design of small funeral chapel in the outskirts of Prague. Aim was to design sustainable, low energy house with extremely tight budget.

Together with co-author Peter Hubinsky, we have decided to take an archetypal composition that resembles house and apply this form to the object. Goal was to create a space that feels friendy, familiar and does not traumatize people mourning their close friends and relatives, which seems like an obvious goal, however, many funeral houses seem like an exact opposite. Cold, stark monstrosities.

Superstructure is to be pre-fabricated in the carpenters workshop and quickly assembled on site. Load bearing wood frames carry the whole structure, leaving the space as unobstructed as possible. Last but not least, side wall panels can open, letting in more light, and opening the venue to the garden during summer.
