Agra Fort was constructed by the 3rd Mughal emperor, Akbar. It was the primary residence of the emperors of the Mughal dynasty until 1638, when the Mughal capital was shifted from Agra to Red Fort in Delhi.
Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is one of the most important and robustly built strongholds of the Mughals, embellished with a number of richly decorated buildings encompassing the imposing Mughal style of art and architecture.
Agra Fort was the site of a battle during the Indian rebellion of 1857, which ended the British East India Company's rule in India and led to a century of direct British rule of India.
The Agra Fort won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2004.
