Kew Systematic Brand Identity

Kew Systematic Brand Identity
Original Brand Logo
Criteria

The concept behind this project was to create a new identity design for one of the companies provided.
The chosen company was ‘Kew, Royal Botanical Gardens’. Kew’s vision is ‘to be the global resource in plant and fungal knowledge, and the world’s leading botanic garden’.
I wanted to create something that would accurately represent what ‘Kew’ stands for. The desired mood that his new identity is meant to portray is harmonious and resilient.
Redesigned Logo
Process

I wanted to use a symbol that represented the botanical, majestic and scientific aspects of the Kew organisation.
The symbol is based on the Strelitzia Reginae plant. It was chosen because of its unique, recognisable shape and resilience to harsh environments that resemble one of the traits of the organisation. The shape of the plant allowed for a separation between the organisation name and tagline, making each easier to read. It was also chosen because the shape of this plant differs from the generic leaf that is often associated with environmental organisations giving the identity a uniqueness. The symbol can also be used by itself.

Colour Scheme Process
Difficulties
There were a few difficulties experienced when doing this project.
The main problem I encountered was choosing an appropriate colour scheme. The design went through about 5 iterations. All the colour schemes were based around having one primary colour and two secondary colours.
The first few colour schemes were based on earthy tones and colours generally found in nature. The fourth one was based on the three colours found in the Strelitzia Reginae plant. This proved to be too hard to read when it came to the business card and banner designs.
The final colour scheme was still based on the colours of the plant but were refined to just one colour. This made the design easy to read and and recognise from a client POV.
