Chilled Magazine Redesign

This redesign was created for a school project, for which we were tasked with redesigning a current magazine. I decided to rework Chilled magazine, a New York City-based magazine that highlights various beer, wine, and spirits, as well as bars and restaurants throughout New York. I decided to make a Chicago edition, and I was inspired by Malört, a notorious spirit that is hard to find outside the Windy City.
This spread is laid out for print with the back cover on the left and the front cover on the right. The back cover was simply an old image that I found and thought was funny. The front cover was completely redesigned, starting with the masthead. I also did the cover illustration, which was inspired by the Chicago flag and vintage bar coasters.
I redesigned the table of contents as well. The image on the left would presumably change with every issue and continues the vintage vibe that was started on the front cover.
For my departments spread, I chose to highlight Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine because moonshine is trendy right now, and I like the brand's packaging. The photos are courtesy of Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine.
I continued the illustration style of the cover for this feature. I chose to use bright green because Malört is infused with wormwood, which naturally brings absinthe to mind.
I wanted the feature spread to be clean, but also have little touches of quirk, so I interspersed more illustrations throughout the story.
For the final spread, I decided to highlight a new Chicago bar, showing their cocktail menu. The image is another old image I found of the Chicago cityscape.
