Molecule- Leather boxes

Molecule
a box for precious things
a box for memories
a box for life
This project wants to represent the tannin composition. The veg tanned leather has the quality of being dyed with natural tannins that give the leather structure. The laser cut patterns echoes the motif of the composition of tannins looked on under a microscope.
Like molecules, our memories make who we are and become, and so a box made of leather for our precious things, with time, becomes more and more beautiful because the leather retains the marks of the products history and the box contain the memories.
The geometrical structure of the box reminds of the chemical structure of the natural elements of the tannins (mimosa, quebracho, chestnut). To enhance the concept the boxes have been coloured with natural dies to represent the plants the tannins are made of: mimosa, quebracho, chestnut and are coloured respectively with turmeric, blueberries and spirulina.
The Geometry
The tannins are absorbed by the animal skins and gives it
structure and this was the inspiration for the geometry chosen to
make the box
.
The Leather
The leather used for making the box is 3 mm and the suede side
has been sandpapered to make it velvet like.
The Assembly
The leather is laser cut, coloured, folded and held together with just one seam on the top edge of the box.
Just one seam makes the box more elastic as a structure and enables an easy assembly of the top and bottom part.
