Charlie, Monsters and the Chocolate Factory Icons
I am the most creative when I am passionate about what I am designing. That is why I decided to create a set of icons based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the book, not the movies). I wanted to be faithful to the characters while adding my own twist and personality to make it mine. I also wanted to improve my Illustrator skills, specially trying to create most things using shapes.
Sketches
After finishing the first set of sketches and with some feedback from Cory Kerr, a BYU-I communications professor, I realized I wasn't completely satisfied with it. It was true to the characters from the book, but lacked personality and creativity. That is when I came up with new sketches.
Thinking about how to add character to my design took me nowhere. It wasn't until I started sketching that I came up with some ideas. I finally set my vision on a monsters theme and it got me excited to start the drafts.
Drafts
After finishing my draft and getting feedback from peers and my professor, I adjusted (or reconstructed) some of the icons. I got rid of all gradients, adjusted some of the colors and reflections and worked on repetition and alignment of the icons.
I am very pleased with the process and final result of the icons. I tried using mostly shapes and it helped as a designer to see shapes everywhere and it strengthen my Illustrator skills. I also had to buy a lot of chocolate, which I am sure helped inspiring me somehow.
