Macassar Community Centre | Architecture Project

This project was done at the University of Cape Town's School of Architecture. The brief instructed a hand-drawn design of a community centre which holds context to its environment and serves as a multi-functional space to its occupants. The building has been designed around a central courtyard assembly space, focusing on welcoming the outdoors into the structure. This design gives some degree of enclosure by surrounding each area with buildings, walls, trees, and seating. The aim was to eliminate areas which would not be occupied, and thus become negative space.

The concept of this design involves providing an inviting facade towards the street which treats the building edge as a zone with volume, a place that invites people to sit, lean and walk in. Each space is surrounded with pockets of activity to keep occupants engaged and involved. Spaces are arranged in a hierarchy, classified as primary public, secondary public, and private space. This hierarchy leads occupants into a more enclosed area the further they dwell.
