KNOW THE HISTORY OF CARL AND IRENE CLARK JEWELRY

Are you starting a Native American jewelry collection that you would like to sell someday, pass on to the next generation, or simply enjoy? You can’t go wrong with pieces from famous Navajo artists like Carl and Irene Clark.

Both artists grew up in Navajo families who are known as rug weavers. Carl's ancestors were silversmiths and painters, too. They were exposed to the unique and colorful culture of their clans since childhood, so it was easy for them to naturally develop a passion for arts and crafts.

Carl Clark's great uncle was Peshlakai Atsitty, who was among the original Navajo silversmiths. However, no one in his clan has taught him how to work with precious stones and metals—he learned this skill by himself. Through trial and error, he eventually mastered silversmithing and inlaying techniques and later taught his wife the skills he developed as a jewelry maker.

The Clarks first began crafting and selling their work in 1974. During this time, Carl had started working on a signature technique which he called, "micro-fine intarsia." This is also an inlaying technique but with a twist. Carl and Irene would cut stones into micro pieces and assemble them to create beautiful images. They blend various colors and two or more types of natural stones in one setting.

After two years of practicing, the Clarks perfected micro-fine intarsia and their work started winning awards in numerous competitions and shows nationally and internationally. They have been featured in Native American publications, too. The couple has also been recognized for their contemporary style, handcrafting fashionable rings and bracelets with images of Man Yei, rug weaves, or the monumental valleys. They often use the water symbol for their trademark as both of them came from water clans.

Carl and Irene Clark partner with reputable sellers of authentic handmade jewelry. If you want to buy their pieces, be sure the shop you are transacting with is an authorized seller.
